Important Update on the Impact of the Malware Attack on IT Systems

On 17th July 2020, Dr Badyal informed all parents and carers that all three academies in the Q3 Academies Trust had been affected by a ransomware attack. In her letter she assured you that there was no evidence of data theft. However, there was significant encryption of data which made many files irrecoverable.

Student Records
Over the summer we have updated student records. We would like all parents and carers to check the accuracy of the data we hold. You can check the accuracy of the data and make any changes by logging onto the Insight ParentPortal. All user accounts have been reset since the summer. Therefore, you will have received a password notification from Insight this month. If you cannot access the ParentPortal, please email us here with your child’s full name and Tutor Group.

Students’ Work
In my end of term letter of 22nd July 2020, I shared that some subjects have been affected by the data loss and that we would audit the completeness of students’ work once they return in September. For some students the loss will be minimal and easily resolved whilst for others the loss could be considerable, representing over a term’s lost work. Some students will have saved work on separate storage devices or some work may be recoverable from e-mails. Once we have completed the audit, we will be in contact with you individually to share the extent of the loss, and the plans for remedying the problem. The examination boards know of our data loss and we are liaising with them about how best to proceed.

We are deeply sorry this has happened and we have changed our practices to reduce the risk of any future data loss. Over the lockdown many educational establishments and businesses have been targeted by ransomware attackers. Several secondary schools in the Midlands have been attacked, and also the University of Birmingham has suffered an encryption attack. The police are currently investigating these attacks nationally, we have been contacted and are assisting the investigation.

We know that the recent months have been challenging enough without the additional demands placed on our current Year 11 students by this attack, and we will do all we can to support your child through this demanding time.
